The name of Latin America is at the top after six young people latinos were recognized among the 50 best students in the world for having, among other virtues, outstanding academic achievements; among those selected there is a mexicana 17 years oldWho are they? Get to know them!
There are stories that inspire, that make you believe, move forward and feel very proud of your roots; one of those stories is that of these six young Latinos who were recognized among the 50 best students in the world after they were selected as Finalists for the Global Student Award Chegg.org 2024and $100,000 annual prize which will be awarded to only one exceptional student who has made a real impact on learning, the lives of his or her peers, and society.
This initiative to reward and recognize the best students in the world emerged in 2021, when the Varkey Foundation partnered with Chegg.org to launch the Global Student Prize.
The six Latinos, including the Mexican student, were selected from over 11,000 nominations and applications from 176 countries. Applicants were chosen based on the following criteria and requirements:
- Academic achievement: excellent grades, awards, published research, or outstanding recommendations.
- Impact on peers: A positive impact through mentoring, peer support, or participation in educational access initiatives for vulnerable communities.
- Contribution to the community: participation in civic, social and volunteer activities.
- Overcoming obstacles: Those who have faced and overcome serious health problems, socioeconomic disadvantages or discrimination.
- Creativity and innovation: artistic talent and knowledge of digital platforms are valued.
- Fostering Global Citizenship: have demonstrated commitment to global cooperation and cultural understanding through projects.

These are the six young Latinos who are among the 50 best students in the world:
Angela Elena Olazaran Laureano (Mexico)
The Mexican, 17 years oldstudy Computer Science at CONALEP in Papantla, VeracruzShe has won awards in robotics competitions and participated in international events such as the RoboRAVE World Championship and a conference at the Space Center Houston. Her project “Ixtlilton,” a virtual medical assistant, was considered for the National STEM Student Award.
Santiago Monsalve Silva (Colombia)
He is a researcher in scientific education with 22 published academic articles; he is currently studying chemical engineering and natural sciences at the University of La Sabana. He created the program “Scientific Education as an Opportunity to Transform the Quality of Life” and “Scientists within your Reach” to make science accessible through an app and website.
Martina Bahiana Basgall Sequeira (Argentina)
She joined the School of Environmental Educators of Youth for Climate and UNICEF and is committed to projects on education, climate crisis, equal opportunities and youth participation. She works with the Ansenuza Leaders Foundation and TECHO Argentina on environmental campaigns and construction of emergency housing. She also obtained a scholarship for the Yale Young Global Scholars program and the Opportunity Funds program of the United States Department of State.
Valentina Wiñay – Quispe (Bolivia)
She is a young indigenous woman who founded, when she was 16, “Soy Warmi,” an NGO that offers comprehensive sexuality education and access to health services. It has more than 150 international volunteers and has impacted more than 40,000 people through different projects. She has obtained prestigious scholarships such as Youth Ambassadors and Opportunity Funds from the United States Department of State, and is a Lincoln Scholars at Centre College.
Natalia Moreno (Peru)
She won her first scholarship at the age of seven and founded the organization “Libros con Sentido” to promote education through reading. She also launched the “Food For All” project to provide free meals to students.
Nathalie Rios Duran (Panama)
She comes from a rural area of Panama where she faced educational deficiencies and limitations. Today she is a biology student at the Centro Regional Universitario de Azuero and works on projects that bring science to children in rural communities.
