Six-Year-Old Girl Found Unconscious at the Bottom of Pool During School Trip

On a school trip, a six-year-old girl was found unconscious at the bottom of a pool. Resuscitated, she was plunged into an artificial coma.

Inanimate at the bottom of a pool

Monday afternoon, around thirty students from the Jean-Jaurès elementary school, in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, go to the Georges-Hermant swimming pool, near the Buttes-Chaumont. There are three split classes of twelve students each.

In this context, the six-year-old girl is found lifeless at the bottom of a pool. Alerted, a lifeguard present on the spot dived to bring the victim to the surface. The latter was resuscitated and then transported to the Robert-Debré hospital with a vital prognosis.

· Diving into an artificial coma

Since then, the girl has been admitted to the intensive care unit and placed in an artificial coma, “to facilitate care”, said the mayor of the 19th arrondissement, François Dagnaud, to AFP.

A source close to the case told AFP on Monday evening that the victim’s heart rate was “normal” even though she is still unconscious.

· “Shortcomings” to be clarified

According to the mayor of the 19th arrondissement, the supervision rate was respected during this school outing. Three class teachers, two professors from the city of Paris, two municipal educators and two lifeguards were on site at the time of the incident.

The town hall nevertheless indicates that there “obviously were shortcomings which it will be up to justice to clarify”. An investigation to seek the causes of the injuries was opened and entrusted to the 19th arrondissement police station.

A cell has also been set up at the Jean Jaures school, to support the students and supervisors present at the swimming pool on Monday. Another was also installed at Gambetta College, a sixth grade class being present at the time of the events.
