Six-time Olympic champion Chris Hoy announced on Friday that he had been diagnosed with cancer. The British former track cyclist initially wanted to keep his diagnosis private, but now feels forced to share it with the outside world.
“For the sake of my young family, I had hoped to keep this information private, but unfortunately I now feel forced to share it,” 47-year-old Hoy wrote on Instagram. “While I am grateful for all the support, I would like to handle this privately.”
Hoy is considered one of the greatest track cyclists of all time. He won no fewer than eleven world titles and six Olympic titles. In 2013, the Briton decided to end his career.
Hoy does not make any statements about the location of the cancer. He was diagnosed last year. “That was a huge shock. Especially because I had had no signals until that moment,” Hoy writes. “I am currently receiving treatment, including chemotherapy. Fortunately, it is going very well.”
“I am optimistic and surrounded by love. As you might imagine, the past few months have been incredibly difficult. But right now I feel great. I continue to work, cycle and live my life as normal.”
In recent years, Hoy has mainly done work in the media. He has his own podcast, among other things. “It’s an exciting year of work, not least because of the Olympic Games. I can’t wait to get started, have fun and share it with you all.”
