Six teams have made it to the quarterfinals Champions League this season. Latest, there is Atletico Madrid and Benfica who had just eliminated their respective opponents.
Atletico qualified after overthrowing Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford, Wednesday (16/3/2022) early morning hrs. Renan Lodi became a hero thanks to his header in the 41st minute.
The result made Diego Simeone’s squad qualify with a 2-1 aggregate. Previously, the two teams drew 1-1 in the first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano, Madrid.
At the same time in Amsterdam, Benfica surprisingly succeeded in overthrowing host Ajax 1-0 thanks to Darwin Nunenz’s goal in the 77th minute. Benfica qualified for the last eight 3-2 on aggregate, having drawn 2-2 in the first leg in Lisbon.
The two teams are following in the footsteps Manchester CityLiverpool, Bayern Munichand Real Madrid who had already confirmed a ticket to the quarterfinals last week.
Man City won 5-0 on aggregate over Sporting CP, then Liverpool get rid of Inter Milan 2-1. Bayern thrashed Salzburg to win 8-2 on aggregate, and Madrid made a comeback to win 3-2 on aggregate over Paris Saint-Germain.
Thus, the Champions League last eight tickets remaining two pieces. First will be fought for Lille and Chelsea, the rest by Juventus and Villarreal.
Chelsea have the advantage of winning 2-0 in the first leg, but Lille can take advantage of Chelsea’s current internal condition which is currently in financial difficulty due to the sanctions imposed on Roman Abramovich.
Meanwhile, Juventus and Villarreal drew 1-1 in the first leg. Whoever wins in the second leg in Turin has the right to qualify for the next phase.
