Six severed heads have been found on top of a car in southwestern Mexico. The car was parked on a busy road in the town of Chilapa de Alvarez. Plastic bags containing body parts were found in the car.
The identities of the dead are unknown, but authorities suspect they have been victims of violence related to drug gangs.
The police suspect that, among other things, because a sign was hung between two trees near the car with a warning. “In Chilapa, the sale of crystal (meth), kidnapping, extortion and theft is strictly prohibited. This will happen to anyone who messes around. The death penalty follows all these crimes.”
The city is located in one of the poorest states in Mexico, Guerrero. In 2014, that state was the scene of the infamous kidnapping and suspected massacre of 43 students who were training to be teachers in the city of Iguala.
In recent years, the number of mutilated bodies left in public has increased. In this way gangs try to intimidate the competition. In June last year, two heads and other body parts were left at polling stations in the northern border city of Tijuana on election day.
