Six people with the monkeypox virus in the United States have died, the country’s health authorities said.
Two people in New York, two more in Chicago, one in Nevada and one in Maryland died, the same sources said.
“Every effort will be made to prevent further suffering from this virus through continued community engagement, information sharing and vaccination,” said the New York City Department of Health.
According to the Chicago Department of Health (CDPH), the two Chicago citizens who died after testing positive for monkeypox suffered from many other health problems, including weakened immune systems.
“Although the number of new cases has dropped considerably since the summer, it clearly reminds us that the virus is dangerous and can cause serious illness and, in very rare cases, even death,” said CDPH Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady.

Monkeypox was a contributing factor in the death of a Maryland resident who was immunocompromised, the Maryland State Health Department said.
The nation’s first confirmed death from monkeypox was reported in Los Angeles County last September.
One person with the virus died in August, but authorities haven’t determined whether the virus caused the death.
In late September, Ohio reported the first death of a person with monkeypox, but noted that “the individual had other health problems as well.”
The United States has had 27,884 probable or confirmed cases of monkeypox as of Friday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
