As reported by the Presidency of Cuba, in the meeting, held this Monday by videoconference with the main political and governmental authorities of the affected provinces (Camagüey, Las Tunas, Granma, Holguín and Santiago de Cuba), it transpired that the intensity of the rains caused also extensive material damage.
Díaz-Canel indicated making a significant effort in housing, although the number of damages is not high, and maintaining priority to the provinces damaged by Hurricane Ian, such as Pinar del Río.
He asked the Ministry of Economy and Planning for a balance of resources, and to evaluate with the national industry, such as the Dujo furniture company and others that can produce, despite the limitations; and do the same with the private sector.
Likewise, he asked to make a fundamental effort in planting various crops and sugar cane, taking advantage of the humid conditions left by the event.
The president entrusted the construction and transportation authorities to carry out a survey and seek solutions to respond to the enormous affectation that exists in roads and railway lines, resorting to all variants and technologies.
Díaz-Canel commented that there were places where the flooding reached levels that had not been seen in the last 30 years and even in quite a few places, its inhabitants say that it is the first time that the water has reached such heights, and especially after a extreme drought.
By the way, he indicated, among the immediate tasks after the recovery stage, study everything that happened and update the disaster reduction plans for this type of intense rains.
“This has been an unusual event; Although in our country we are accustomed to working in conditions of intense rain, this has to do directly with climate change,” he stated at the meeting, which was also attended by Roberto Morales, Organization Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party, and Vice President Salvador Valdes.
It was also reported that the willingness of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to support the recovery has already been received, as well as the United Nations system of organizations that have headquarters in the country.
