Lufthansa Technik will cut 800 of a total of 1,400 jobs in line maintenance in the coming months, the company announced today. The reason for this is the closure of the stations at the decentralized airports in Hamburg, Bremen, Düsseldorf, Hanover and Leipzig. Line maintenance at the Lufthansa hub in Frankfurt (north) is also affected by the closure. This has now been announced to the employees by management.
Some locations will remain
“Preparations for the restructuring of the maintenance business at Lufthansa Technik are proceeding,” said a company spokesman when asked by airliners.de. “The company management and co-determination committees were able to agree on a reconciliation of interests within the framework of an arbitration board,” he emphasized.
Lufthansa Technik is now counting on many employees to accept a severance program. Only then will it be decided how many terminations should be issued. The severance pay program is rated as comparatively attractive.
As early as February it leaked out that the economic situation in Bremen, Düsseldorf, Hanover and Leipzig was critical. Closures in Hamburg and Frankfurt could only be avoided through “massive cost reductions”, it said at the time. But these no longer seem to be enough, they too will be closed on December 31st.
In Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Stuttgart and the Frankfurt Süd sub-operation, however, continuation is possible after a detailed examination, the company said. However, this is also only possible with the reduction of staff and measures to improve efficiency. The closure of the line maintenance stations in Düsseldorf, Hanover, Bremen, Leipzig and the line maintenance sub-operations in Hamburg and Frankfurt Nord on December 31, 2021 was a decision by the Lufthansa Technik board on the basis of a reconciliation of interests with the staff representatives.
