The away goal rule in the premier class is history. As UEFA announced yesterday, the controversial regulation will be removed from European competitions with the start of the new 2021/22 season. This should ensure more fairness, especially since from now on no team can be eliminated even though it has scored as many hits as the opponent. The regulation was quite problematic when you consider how often an away goal decided between victory and defeat. In the recent past, Bayern have had changeable experiences.
1. FC Bayern – Paris St. Germain (quarter-finals 2020/21)
The Munich team had their backs to the wall after their 3-2 defeat at the Allianz Arena at home last season. However, Eric-Maxim Choupo Moting scored the 1-0 winner in the second leg. Afterwards, the Munich ran in vain. The defending champion was thrown out of the competition despite a 3: 3 overall rating.
2. FC Bayern – Atletico Madrid (semifinals 2015/16)
With a 0: 1 mortgage from Madrid, Bayern tried again to turn things around in Munich. This almost worked, especially since FCB dominated the game and scored two goals. However, Antoine Griezmann made the decisive away goal for the Spaniards after a counterattack and sealed the Munich out.
3. FC Bayern – Arsenal FC (round of 16 2012/13)
With an overall result of 4-0 against Juventus Turin and 7-0 against Barcelona, FC Bayern strolled into the final (2-1 against Dortmund. However, that almost never happened. After a great 3-1 win in London , Munich made the worst game of the Champions League season in the second leg. After the 2-0 defeat, Bayern only saved the away goal rule. Bayern fans did not have to tremble for a long time because the team seemed to have everything under control for a long time and only received the goal five minutes before the end.
4. FC Bayern – Inter Milan (round of 16 2010/11)
A year after the lost Champions League final, Bayern wanted to return the favor at Inter Milan. With a 1-0 win in Milan, the course seemed to have been set. After conceding an early goal by Eto’o, things went like clockwork in the second leg. After a 2-1 lead, Bayern gambled away the lead. The 2-3 home defeat was definitely one of the most unnecessary and annoying defeats in the club’s recent history.
5. FC Bayern – Manchester United (quarter-finals 2009/10)
After Ivica Olić’s last-minute goal, FC Bayern set off for Manchester with a 2-1 lead. However, the Red Devils literally ran over Bayern at Old Trefford and took a 3-0 lead. However, Olić brought Bayern back into play shortly before half-time. All Bayern fans will remember the crucial scene very well. After a corner from Ribery, Arjen Robben takes the ball volley and pounds it right into the corner. To quote it in the words of Marcel Reif: “An incredible goal”. Ultimately, this was enough to advance thanks to the away rule.
6. FC Bayern – Fiorentina (round of 16 2009/10)
Same season, same course of play and same hero: just a few weeks before the Manchester game, Bayern also slipped into the next round with a 2-1 home win and a 2-3 away defeat. Even against the Italians, it was Arjen Robben who ensured progress with the decisive dream goal. The Dutchman pulled in his inimitable way from the right side inwards and chased the ball right into the far corner. A real dream goal!
