HOSPITAL
VENICE The fear, in the months of calm, is that it would happen again. And that would happen was inevitable with the return, in this early autumn, to everyday life. But the virus still bites and hospitals – albeit protected by strict protocols – are not immune from the spread of a contagion.
This is what happened in recent days in the Medicine department of the Santi Giovanni e Paolo hospital in Venice, the Civil, where three patients admitted to Medicine and three health workers were positive last night. You are infected, all asymptomatic, for an account not yet closed since the processing of the swabs is still in progress, as well as the screening and traceability of the contacts of the positives. While the whole department is continuously sanitized and sanitized.
WHAT HAPPENED
The first signs that something was happening between the wards and beds of the Department of Civil Medicine came at the beginning of the week, when there was a tightening on the use of protective devices: hospitalized patients were told to use masks not only in the common areas and some operators wore Ffp2 masks.
The evidence came in close proximity (with a swab) with the coronavirus positivity of a patient who arrived at the Civilian from the outside. Within a few hours, the man infected a patient who was hospitalized in the room with him and a third patient who was about to be transferred: all three asymptomatic, positive patients were held in hospital and moved – in isolation – in the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Civil.
The epidemiological investigation carried out so far by the management of the Civil hospital has also highlighted the positivity of some of the operators of the department, at the moment we are talking about three employees, also asymptomatic. «The“ contact tracing ”actions between the patients and the operators of the ward continue – the management of the Venetian hospital said – The ward is subjected to the necessary sanitation measures».
All this to extinguish in the bud what until last night was still a small outbreak imported from the outside, but which had already introduced the virus between patients (now forced to wear a mask even in bed) and health workers. Also for this reason it was decided to close the entrance to the Civil Medicine department to those who do not need it. Which means, suspension of visits from relatives of the patients.
THE PREVIOUS IN NOALE
The last emergency inside a hospital structure, Ulss 3 Serenissima had faced it at the end of April – therefore in the midst of the furious spring struggle – when the coronavirus had entered by force among the hospitalized in the Long-term ward of the Noale.
Between the end of April and the beginning of May, more than thirty infections of hospitalized patients, health workers and doctors had been recorded, one of whom had been hospitalized in turn. A contagion that had also resulted in some deaths among patients.
Also in that case it had been an outbreak born outside the hospital in the city of the Storm: the virus had entered and spread, sowing panic and forcing the health management of Ulss 3 to move most of the infected to the hospital of Dolo, chosen by the Region as the main center in the fight against the virus for the Venetian territory. Health investigations had shown that all protection systems were provided regularly but something had gone wrong with the shielding from the outside.
