Six dead in attack on Shiite mosque in Afghanistan – Diario La Página – 2024-05-01 18:08:35

Six people were killed in an armed attack on a mosque in western Afghanistan, a government spokesman said on Tuesday. “An unknown person shot at civilian worshipers” on Monday night in the Guzara district of Herat province, Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Mateen Qani reported.

“Six civilians were made martyrs and one wounded,” he added on the X social network on Tuesday morning. The state news agency Bakhtar News reported the same report of the attack, which occurred in a district just south of the provincial capital, also called Herat. Authorities later raised the number of injuries to three. The attack occurred at the Imam Zaman mosque.

For now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, although analysts point to the regional branch of the Islamic State jihadist group as the greatest threat to the security of Afghanistan after the return to power of the Taliban in 2021. IS considers the Shiite minority of the country and has carried out several attacks against it.

A suicide attack on a Hazara community education center in Dasht-e-Barchi in October 2022 left 43 dead and 83 injured, mostly girls and young women. In May 2021, an attack on a girls’ school in this same location left at least 110 dead, mostly girls, and 290 injured.
