Architect Will Burgesearnthouse Earns RIBA’s Highest Honor
A daring London home, designed by architect Will Burges for his family, has been awarded the prestigious RIBA House of the Year for 2024.
Dubbed "Six Columns," the house, built on a tricky wedge-shaped lot in Crystal Palace, won over the Royal Institute of British Architects with its innovative design and emphasis on adaptability. RIBA recognized the home’s unique character, praising its ability to evolve with the needs of the Burges family for years to come.
"Building your own home is an incredibly demanding undertaking; if you’re lucky enough to ever get the chance, it’s likely something you’ll only do once in your lifetime," said Je Ahn, director of Studio Weave and chair of the judging panel. "This project showcases something really important: your home isn’t a one-sized-fits-all affair, frozen in time. It’s a living, breathing entity that can evolve with you."
Six Columns stands out with its blend of modern styling and touches reflecting the work of influential architects, including Mies van der Rohe and a nod to Brutalist design.
Inside, natural materials like exposed concrete and brick dominate, highlighting the home’s honest aesthetic. Untreated spruce wood, intended for easy future modification, adds warmth and flexibility, reflecting the home’s overall theme. Open and flexible living spaces flow seamlessly with smaller, more contained bedrooms, allowing the house to change and adapt alongside the growing needs of the Burges family.
The home’s "RIBA’s House of the Year” award is highly coveted, recognizing the best standalone home designed by a UK architect each year. Six Columns triumphed against a Taubacle of six impressive contenders, including Surman Weston’s Peckham House and Hugh Strange Architect’s farmstead in Cornwall.
