Six children have died after strep A infection in Greece

Six deaths of children following complications from bacterial infection with group A streptococcus have been registered in Greece since the beginning of the year, according to Greek health authorities, Greek media reported.

The latest case is of a 7-year-old child who died in a hospital in Thessaloniki, Kathimerini reports. The child is from the city of Naoussa in Northern Greece and died of complications related to the bacterial infection with streptococcus A – the cause of pharyngitis and scarlet fever.

He was admitted to the hospital in Naoussa last Saturday with fever and symptoms of gastroenteritis. The next day his health worsened and the doctors decided to transfer him to Thessalonica, first to the hospital of Gennimatas and then to Hippocrates, where the child died.

The nine-year-old cousin of the dead boy is also being treated at Gennimatas Hospital with similar but milder symptoms.

The first death from Strep A in Greece was announced by the National Organization for Public Health (EODY) in February amid a surge in cases of the disease across Europe.
