Six Children Declared Cured from Mycoplasma Pneumoniae Infection in Jakarta Hospitals

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Six children who were confirmed to be infected with the mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria have been declared cured. They have carried out their activities as usual and returned to school. The six patients received treatment from two hospitals in DKI Jakarta.

Five of the six patients previously received treatment at Medistra Hospital, Jakarta. Meanwhile, one other patient is undergoing inpatient treatment at the Jakarta Woman and Children’s Clinic or JWCC Hospital.

From October to November the six children received treatment. Three of them required hospitalization. The youngest child patient infected with mycroplasm pneumoniae was three years old, while the oldest was 12 years old.

Initially, the symptoms that appear in children infected with mycoplasma pneumoniae tend to be almost the same. Starting with a hot cough and headache and shortness of breath. Currently, the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) is still conducting an investigation regarding this discovery.

“The epidemiological investigation is continuing. We are digging up information starting from where the child goes to school, then at school there are other children who are infected or not. Then we find out where they live,” said the Director General of Disease Prevention and Control at the Ministry of Health, Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, Wednesday (6 /12/2023).

Maxi appealed to the public not to panic in the face of mycoplasma pneumoniae which shocked North China several weeks ago. China’s National Health Commission at that time stated that the increase in pneumonia cases was caused by several respiratory tract pathogens such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria, influenza viruses, and other respiratory tract infections. respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as well as adenoviruses.

According to Maxi, treatment for mycoplasma pneumoniae patients is not too difficult. “Mycoplasma pneumonia due to bacteria is enough with antibiotics and it’s finished,” he said.

Once considered mysterious

The public is advised not to worry about mycoplasma pneumoniae which is considered mysterious in Northern China and has resulted in a fairly high increase in cases. Some hospitals are full of children suffering from a mysterious pneumonia.

Lung Specialist Doctor at Persahabatan Hospital, Jakarta, Erlina Burhan said the mycroplasm pneumoniae found in Northern China was not mysterious and not similar to the Covid-19 virus. Pneumonia is inflammation of the lungs caused by germs, bacteria and viruses that have existed for decades, far from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Most of the data reported regarding mycoplasma pneumoniae only requires outpatient treatment and has mild symptoms. Mycoplasma pneumoniae, said Erlina, also has another name, namely walking pneumonia, which means patients who come to the hospital without having to be taken by ambulance.

However, at that time, mycoplasma pneumoniae was not in the spotlight or received much attention from the public. This is because the symptoms caused are not severe and are not one of the targets routinely checked at the hospital. For the inspection, separate tools and procedures are required.

Erlina said, this is not a new disease, nor is it a new germ or bacteria, but bacteria that we have known for a long time. “So then why is it so widespread, because there is an increase in cases in northern China, and if we look at the media, many children are being treated in hospital,” said Erlina to Liputan6.com.
