Volleyball Kim Yeon-kyung (35), golf Park In-bi (35), taekwondo Lee Dae-hoon (31), shooting Jin Jong-oh (44), archery Oh Jin-hyeok (41) ), badminton Kim So-young (31) officially issued a challenge.

On the 4th, as a result of the Korea Sports Council’s nomination of candidates for the IOC Athletes’ Commission for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, recommendation documents for these six were submitted.

The recommendation of this candidate is the first gateway to select a Korean member in the IOC Athletes Commission selection process scheduled for the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will open in July next year.

The Athletes Commissioner, who serves as a bridge between the IOC and athletes, has the same rights and duties as IOC members, including voting on the host city of the Winter and Summer Olympics, and is a position where they can contribute to sports diplomacy.

During the Paris Olympics, a total of four members of the Athletes Commission will be selected, and the voting will be conducted for candidates recommended by the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of each country. Each NOC must nominate one candidate to the IOC by 1 September.

The Korea Olympic Committee plans to confirm one Korean candidate through procedures such as internal review by the Athletes Committee.

All six players who entered the competition left a deep mark in Korean sports history.

Kim Yeon-kyung is a ‘living legend’ of women’s volleyball who led Korea to the semifinals at the 2012 London and 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

He has been active in the national team as well as in overseas leagues including Turkey, and has risen to the ranks of the best players of all time.

Inbi Park is a star called the “Empress of Golf” after winning 21 victories on the LPGA Tour.

In addition to winning the four major competitions, he also achieved the first ‘Golden Slam’ by winning the gold medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Lee Dae-hoon won a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics and a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and is a signboard of Korea, the birthplace of taekwondo, which has won three world championships.

Jin Jong-oh won a total of 6 medals at the Olympics, including 4 gold medals and 2 silver medals, and along with Kim Su-nyeong (4 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze) in archery, held the record for the most medals won by a Korean in history.

The intentions of Kim Yeon-kyung, Park In-bi, Lee Dae-hoon, and Jin Jong-oh to run have already been known, but Oh Jin-hyuk and Kim So-young also joined, making it a ‘sixth round’.

Oh Jin-hyeok won gold medals in the individual event at the London Olympics and the team event at the Tokyo Olympics, and is the driving force behind the Korean men’s archery team that contributed to the bronze medal in the London team event. He also won five gold medals in the team event at the World Championships.

Kim So-young is the representative of the badminton women’s doubles team, who won a bronze medal with Kong Hee-yong at the Tokyo Olympics.

There are a total of two IOC Athletes Commissioners from Korea.

Moon Dae-seong, a gold medalist in taekwondo at the 2004 Athens Olympics, was elected for the first time in 2008, and Ryu Seung-min, a gold medalist in men’s singles table tennis at the Athens Olympics, was elected in 2016 and serves an eight-year term.

Chairman Yoo was selected as a Korean candidate after competing with Jin Jong-oh in 2016 and Jang Mi-ran, the current vice minister of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, who was a gold medalist in weightlifting.

In the evaluation to select one domestic candidate, criteria are taken into account such as Olympic performance, athlete career, and international activity skills, including foreign language proficiency.

Chairman Yoo had the last competition with Jin Jong-oh when selecting Korean candidates, and was able to gain an advantage thanks to a large gap in the language category.
