An online store misleads its customers with fake discounts on the goods it offers in order to sell them at their regular prices. This was reported by the online platform “We, the users”, where a report was received from a citizen who once again encountered the incorrect practice.
“This is the second time that I have been deceived by the prices of products offered at a discount in this online store! Once selected and added to cart, they lose their discount!”says the victim.
When he objects to the practice, he receives the following response: “Unfortunately, the discounted price was for products when they were in stock, which are currently out of stock. I have checked, as the products you mentioned have been ordered by other customers and they are currently not available in stock with us, for this reason there is no discount for them, and you can see the real price at which they are offered when you open the page itself of the product, as well as if you add it to the cart. We apologize for the inconvenience, please note that unfortunately it takes longer to update prices when a product has been discounted but is no longer in stock due to high volume. You can always see the correct price of the product, as it is when it is opened on the page or added to the cart.”
After the person warned that he would contact the institutions and consumer organizations, the e-store asked him “would you like us to check if we can offer the products at the lower price?”.
Attracting the consumer with prices at which, in practice, the offered goods cannot be sold to him is an unfair commercial practice. This is because the moment of presentation of the pricing information, which is essentially false, presupposes the moment of the consumer’s decision to make that purchase. I.e. the consumer behavior of the customer is a function of the deliberate addressing to him of misleading and incorrect information for one of the most important terms of the deal – the price.
Discount notices it is no coincidence that they are separately commented on in consumer legislation and are considered sales methods. They are actually used to drive sales based on additional psychological and marketing tricks. However, these tricks should not develop into unfair practices.
In this particular case we can we are talking about practiceas the same user reports repetition of the same action – a scenario that unfolds in exactly the same way every time.
When shopping at electronic stores – after you have loaded the e-cart with the goods you want, always check the amount that is written next to the “buy” button. There, the merchant is required to state the final price you will have to pay for your purchase, We the Consumers recommend.
