Sister Marešová tried compensation at another publishing house

This week, nurse Věra Marešová heard two verdicts in her long-running dispute with the media.

She wrote about how Věra Marešová was charged by police officers in 2014 on the basis of an expert opinion from the murder of six patients in a hospital in Rumburk. The nurse denied guilt from the beginning and was finally acquitted after two years.

She then sued several media companies over the way they reported on her case. On Thursday, the Municipal Court in Prague issued a final verdict, according to which TV Nova is to pay it 1.2 million crowns.

As the List of Reports found out, the District Court for Prague 5 decided another case this week. On Tuesday, he partially upheld Věra Marešová in a case where she filed a lawsuit against the Vltava Labe Media publishing house. It is owned by the investment company Penta and is published, for example, by the national daily.

“The defendant is to pay Mrs. Marešová 100 thousand with interest on arrears,” said Jana Humeni, a spokeswoman for the District Court for Prague 5. This interest is 8.05 percent per annum and is calculated from July 2017.

However, in the second part of the lawsuit, in which Marešová wanted 2.5 million crowns from the publishing house, the court dismissed the lawsuit, according to Humeni.

This judgment is not yet final. “We will wait for a written judgment and then consider whether to appeal,” said lawyer Jan Poláček, who represents Marešová. Vltava Elbe Media spokeswoman Aneta Koudelková has not yet responded to the questions.

Marešová is sued by media companies, among other things, because journalists wrote about her as a “murderess”, “sister Death” or described her as a person who “killed”.

However, according to the courts, the state was primarily responsible for the consequences caused to Marešová. By prosecuting her, she lost her privacy and work, and she developed health complications.

The court also said that the nurse had to leave Rumburk and move to Prague. At first she worked at Na Homolce Hospital, but her employment was terminated on a trial basis. She previously stated in court that she works in another medical facility where she is satisfied.

Because she was wrongly accused and spent several months in custody, Marešová is suing the state for almost five million crowns. In this case, the judgment has not yet been handed down.

Věra Marešová also sued not only TV Nova, but also other publishing houses, some disputes are still being resolved by some courts. Marešová’s dispute with the Czech News Center, which publishes, for example, the tabloid daily Blesk, is also final.

The Municipal Court in Prague decided to pay Věra Marešová 900 thousand crowns for the method of reporting on the case.
