After the huge success of the first “Sissi“-Filmes, director and producer Ernst Marischka set about a sequel. But she was on the brink for a short time after he received a letter from actress Magda Schneider.
In her letter, the mother of the “Sissi“-Actress Romy Schneider that the role of her daughter urgently needs to be changed, otherwise it would be detrimental to her career.
“Sissi”: Romy Schneider’s mother refused – “It’s too early!”
To the emergence of the “Sissi“Movies are rife with rumors to this day. The Viennese film scholar Clara Huber was able to confirm one of them after extensive research in a private collection in Salzburg. This has now been published in the Sissi special edition of the Berliner Morgenpost.
Among other things, Huber found a letter in the archive that Magda Schneider wrote to Ernst Marischka in 1956 before the filming of “Sissi – The Young Empress”. In it she demanded: “Ernstl, it is too early for Romy to play a wife and mother!” If it had been her way, the film would have taken a completely different turn.
As a reminder: In the second film, Sissi becomes pregnant for the first time. Their daughter Sophie is born and is taken away from her by Sissi’s mother-in-law shortly after the birth.

„Sissi“-Star Magda Schneider wanted to save daughter Romy from the end of her career
Magda justified her doubts as to whether the then 17-year-old Romy Schneider should really play a mother in front of the camera: “First and foremost, I have to think about the further development of the child!”
Above all, that meant Romy’s career as an actress. In the film industry even then there was the thesis that although a mother role often arouses interest in actresses, they would then be offered significantly fewer leading roles.
It would be an economic risk for the Schneider family and so Magda Schneider, who played the role of Duchess Ludovika in the “Sissi” films, had a considerable influence on the script for the sequel.
In “Sissi – The Young Empress” Romy played a mother, but she was only shown in very few scenes with a child. In the film, Sissi’s mother-in-law was the culprit, but in reality it was Romy’s own mother who campaigned for the leading actress to be seen as little as possible with a baby in her arms.
