Franz survives the attack and Count Grunne, questioning the perpetrator, discovers that the principal is a Hungarian. The description of the man corresponds to the face of Lajos and consequently Fanny, invited by Sissi to return to live in the Imperial Villa, goes to the Kohlmarkt to get her things back and urges him to flee far away. Then, Franz leaves for Lombardy to put down the uprisings and Sissi takes care of the wounded returning from the front, in the hospital set up in Laxenburg. Here comes Count Grunne and his arm is amputated.
Sissi learns that the Austrian army, in Milan, is succumbing and that Hungary could take advantage of the situation to rise again, so she decides to join her husband and deliver him the letter from Count Andrassy. Franz, however, does not intend to deal with the Hungarians and indeed, realizing that Sissi is pregnant again, accuses her of having an affair with the Count.
SISSI plots: Fanny is hanged …
Franz finally accepts Sissi’s intercession in favor of Hungary and prepares a trip to Buda, with his wife and daughters, to relax relations with the most important nation of the empire and meet Count Andrassy. In Buda, things are going well, except for a second attack by Lajos, which is foiled. Lajos is killed by Andrassy, but Grünne notices the same pendant around the attacker’s neck that she had seen carried by Fanny, thus realizing that the two were linked.
Even before this discovery leads to any consequences, little Sophie falls ill and dies of a fever. Sissi falls into despair, becoming catatonic. Meanwhile, Fanny is arrested and sentenced to death. Sissi talks to her in prison one last time, then watches helplessly as she hangs. Franz seems hardened, he too closes himself in a sad and gloomy silence.
