Ukraine transfers 50,000 Troops to Land Forces to Strengthen Combat Brigades
In a significant strategic move, Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Alexander Syirski signed an order on January 11 to transfer approximately 50,000 troops from various branches of the military to the Land Forces. This decision aims to bolster combat brigades and initiate a rotation process, according to a source at the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The transfer represents roughly 20% of all Ukrainian soldiers currently stationed at the frontlines, as estimated by the New York Times. Earlier assessments by the NYT placed the number of Ukrainian troops at 250,000, compared to 400,000 Russian soldiers.
“We have to do this to start the rotary mechanism,” the source told Ukrainian pravda. “The resources currently studied in the training centers are sufficient only to minimize the parts, not for complete maintenance of the combat component. And thanks to these movements between the troops, as well as the new soldiers, we will be able to do this.”
This decision follows reports in the Ukrainian press about the transfer of highly qualified specialists to the Land Forces. however, on January 14, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine clarified that it does not plan to move aviation technicians to infantry roles.
In a statement, the Ukrainian armed forces emphasized that Commander-in-Chief Syirski has banned the transfer of specialists in high-tech specialties, especially those trained abroad to operate foreign military equipment. Despite this, some categories of Air Force personnel are being reassigned to the Land and Landing Forces after completing training at designated centers.
At the end of last year, all branches of the Ukrainian military began sending personnel to ground units, wiht the Air Force being no exception. As the second-largest branch of the military, the Air Force has played a critical role in supporting ground operations.
