Siren alarm due to fire in Neuss disturbs night’s rest

A siren startled the people of Düsseldorf on Monday night, but after about a quarter of an hour the scare was over. What was the trigger?

On the night of Monday, a siren woke people in Düsseldorf from their sleep. On the Reddit platform, users wondered on Monday where the alarm sound came from – and why. Some users reported that the sirens could be heard for around 15 minutes before they fell silent. “I can’t say exactly where it’s coming from outside, but it must be a bit further away because it doesn’t sound that loud to me,” wrote one of them.

And indeed, the sirens did not originate in Düsseldorf, but in the neighboring city of Neuss. A fire broke out here at around 2 a.m. on Monday night in a paper processing plant on Floßhafenstrasse in Neuss harbor. The Neuss fire department announced this on Instagram. “The fire triggered the fire alarm system as intended and alerted the fire department,” said the emergency services. The company’s own siren is part of this system and was turned off by the fire department after around 15 minutes.

The fire was extinguished, but the entire production hall was filled with smoke and had to be evacuated. The operation was completed after about an hour and no one was injured.
