‘Upset Every Day’

Sir Salman Rushdie has spoken in chilling detail about the attack he endured two years ago, in which he was stabbed while on stage. The Booker Prize-winning author, known for works like Midnight’s Children and The Satanic Verses, recently had a candid conversation with the BBC about the incident, discussing his injuries and the emotional toll it has taken on him.

Attack and Aftermath

According to Rushdie, the attack took place at an education institute in New York state in August 2022, as he was preparing to give a lecture. Rushdie recalled the assailant sprinting up the stairs and stabbing him 12 times, including his neck and abdomen. The author recounted the horrifying experience, stating that he couldn’t have fought or run away from the attacker.

As a result, Rushdie suffered severe injuries, including a damaged liver, hands, and severed nerves in his right eye. The attack left his eye hanging down his face, causing vision loss. Rushdie expressed how upsetting it is to deal with the loss of vision in his eye on a daily basis, affecting simple tasks like walking down stairs or pouring water into a glass.

Fighting Back with New Book and Imaginary Conversation

Despite the trauma, Rushdie said he is deploying his pain into his new book titled “Knife.” The book explores the aftermath of the attack and how it impacted his life. Rushdie also has an imaginary conversation with his alleged attacker in the book, raising thought-provoking questions about the nature of violence and the reasons behind it. He reflects on the importance of freedom of speech and his advocacy for it.

Stronger Than Hatred

When asked about the recall of his personal belongings during the attack, Rushdie said it was a survival instinct, a belief that he would not die and needed his belongings, particularly his house keys and credit cards. He highlighted the importance of love and his wife, poet and novelist Rachel Eliza Griffiths, who has been an invaluable source of support and strength during his recovery.

Challenges and Triumph

The aftermath of the attack and the years following his controversial book, The Satanic Verses, have made Rushdie aware of the challenges faced by those advocating for freedom of expression. The author emphasized the need to permit speech, even when it clashes with one’s personal beliefs, as it lies at the core of safeguarding this freedom.

Looking Ahead

Rushdie expressed his determination to continue public engagements with increased caution and emphasized the importance of security measures. However, despite the challenges he has faced, Rushdie remains resolute and determined not to live a confined life.
