Sir Michael has already said several times that he wants to end his acting career, but there was always a tempting offer that made him throw himself into work again. But this time, after wrapping up The Great Escaper, it’s serious. “I used to say I was going to retire. Here it is now for real,” he said in an interview with the BBC.
He was driven to such a decision by the realization that the range of roles offered to him due to his highly respected years would become small. “Now I can only get roles of 90-year-old men. Or maybe 85 years old,” he joked. “They won’t be the main characters. There are no 90-year-old main characters, they are young, beautiful guys and girls.”
In The Great Escaper, he portrays real-life World War II veteran Bernie Jordan, who rose to fame in 2014 when he escaped from a nursing home to participate in France’s famous June 6, 1944 D-Day celebrations. This operation launched the invasion of German-occupied Western Europe, which contributed to the Allied victory in World War II.
Sir Michael co-starred in the film with the great English actress and former politician Glenda Jackson, who died in June aged 87, a few months after the film was completed. It should be noted that Jackson is one of the few actresses who was able to earn the so-called “triple crown of acting” – both the Academy Award (twice), the highest US honor in television, the Emmy Award (three times), and the highest US honor in the theater Tony Award. Only 24 people have achieved such success – 9 men and 15 women. Among them, Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Geoffrey Rush, Rita Moreno, Vanessa Redgrave, Maggie Smith, Ellen Burstyn, Helen Mirren, Frances McDormand, Jessica Lange and Viola Davis are currently alive.
Sir Michael has also won wide acclaim. He won two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor – in 1986 for his role in Hannah and Her Sisters and in 1999 for his role in The Cider House Rules, but was nominated six times in total. In addition, he has been nominated for an Oscar for five decades along with legends such as Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, Paul Newman, Laurence Olivier, Denzel Washington, Katharine Hepburn.
In 2000, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his contribution to cinema.
After his acting career is over, Sir Michael is not going to languish in idleness. His thriller “Deadly Game” will be published this year, and in general – life goes on. “Even though I’m 90, I’m still capturing every second,” says Sir Michael.
