Sir John Eliot Gardiner Leaves Berlioz’s Les Troyens Production: Replacement Conductor Dinis Sousa Steps In

Sir John Eliot Gardiner, who was to conduct both parts of Berlioz’s Les Troyens at La Côte-Saint-André, left the production after the first part yesterday. He is replaced this evening by his assistant Dinis Sousa. An altercation with a soloist is mentioned.

The Trojans is the highlight of the Berlioz Festival this year, due to the dimensions of this work and the fame of the guest conductor, Sir John Eliot Gardiner.

The work is so monumental that it is often divided into two parts (Berlioz himself did not hear his entire creation during his lifetime). This is also how she gives herself at the moment at Berlioz, in his Festival at La Côte-Saint-André: yesterday evening, Tuesday 22 August, took place The Capture of Troy and tonight Wednesday 23 The Trojans at Carthage.

Two evenings that were to lead Gardiner, but he was replaced halfway through, by his assistant Dinis Sousa.

This information initially raised fears for the health of the octogenarian chef, especially in these times of heat wave (the mercury briskly reaches 36°C at La Côte-Saint-André), and this production of Trojans must then go with this same cast to Salzburg this Saturday August 26, to Versailles next Tuesday, to Berlin on Friday September 1 and to the BBC Proms on the 3. However, according to the Telegrapha BBC spokesperson is said to have already said on this subject: “We take any allegations of inappropriate behavior seriously and are currently establishing the facts of the incident.”

In fact, the media Slipped Disc as well as the Telegraph evoke a violent reaction behind the scenes (which would have even gone beyond words) on the part of the conductor, towards a singer who would have made the mistake of leaving the stage on the wrong side.

Our correspondent present at the Berlioz Festival during these two evenings of Trojans will soon publish its report on our columns [mise à jour : il nous annonce à l’instant que le remplaçant Dinis Sousa ainsi que les chanteurs ont reçu un triomphe à l’issue de cette seconde soirée].
