Sir Anthony Hopkins has topped the classical music charts with his debut album, Life is a Dream, released through Decca Classics in August 2026. The 88-year-old Oscar-winning actor selected a range of his orchestral works written across more than six decades, collaborating with Grammy Award-winning conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Music has always been a central part of Hopkins’ life. Hailing from Port Talbot in Wales, he began playing the piano at age four and was executing pieces by Beethoven and Chopin only a short time afterward. At the age of six, he started improvising, eventually advancing to write music for regional theatrical productions by the time he reached his teens. Some of the works on the disc honor Hopkins’ Welsh heritage, such as “Bracken Road” from 1947: Suite for Solo Piano and Orchestra, which was inspired by the streets, meadows, farmland, and mountains around his childhood home in Margam, according to The Violin Channel.
Further exploring his personal history, the track “My Fatherland” pays tribute both to Wales and to Hopkins’ own father, who was a baker. The disc also contains works dedicated to loved ones, such as “Stella Aria” written for his wife and “Tara” composed for his niece. Alongside the Philharmonia Orchestra, the recording features pianist Sergio Tiempo, cellist Gregorio Nieto, The Bach Choir, and the boy choristers of Winchester Cathedral.
