Sinterklaas and his entourage were moored in Antwerp on Saturday. Due to the corona crisis, this was not possible during a public event this year. The Saint therefore arrived in the deepest secrecy in the middle of the night, but the event was still broadcast on One and Ketnet on Saturday afternoon, so that the children did not have to miss anything. Sinterklaas also brought the redeeming message that there are no naughty children this year.

According to Saint Nicholas, it was the first time since the solar eclipse of 1738 that he had to arrive in Antwerp in the dark. “But it was a wonderful experience,” said the Good Saint. “The roofs are even more beautiful than usual at night.” Sinterklaas was not welcomed on Het Eilandje by thousands of children, parents and grandparents, but only by his chairman. He did address the children in a video message. “Dear children, I know you have a hard time sometimes,” he referred to the corona crisis. ‘You must miss your school friends and your grandma and grandpa. Going out for a party or swimming with nieces and nephews is not an option now. But in your way, you are all little heroes. I am proud of you.’
In his secret headquarters, the Saint was then welcomed by Antwerp mayor Bart De Wever, who received some speculaas and a mandarin as a present. De Wever also announced that from next year Sinterklaas will be able to address the children from the balcony of the town hall again, because that building is now almost ready after years of restoration.
Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet had to search for the book of Saint Nicholas, but were eventually able to conclude, to the relief of everyone, that there are no naughty children this year.
