There will definitely be no Sinterklaas arrival in Staphorst this year. The municipality decided this after the organization had previously withdrawn.
According to Mayor Jan ten Kate, the arrival has become “more complex than before”. He is referring, among other things, to last year’s arrival, which got out of hand. The action group Kick Out Zwarte Piet then wanted to demonstrate in Staphorst.
Some motorists on the A28 who took the Staphorst exit were met by hundreds of people whose faces were partly painted in black. Ultimately, the demonstration was canceled by the mayor for safety reasons. Since then, the arrival in Staphorst has been classified as a “high-risk event”.
‘Conditions on appearance’
The committee that has been organizing the entry for years withdrew at the beginning of this month due to “conditions that the municipality imposes on Piet’s appearance and the entry itself”, writes RTV East. According to the broadcaster, the committee wanted a completely black Pete with small dots on the cheeks. The municipality says that no requirements have been set for Piet’s appearance.
There is too little time to arrange the arrival in a different, safe way, says the mayor. “There is now insufficient time to properly organize the event.”
