“What triggered the decision was not an issue of permits, it was an issue of market size, which are different reasons,” was the argument with which the Minister of Sciences, Aysén Etcheverry, reported this Friday that the Sinovac laboratory will not install its Innovation and Development Center (R&D) in the Antofagasta region for the manufacture of vaccines against Covid-19, hepatitis and influenza. The Secretary of State thus confirmed that the company will not invest the USD 60 million dollars programmed for the installation of the plant in the northern city, since the Chinese company had decided to do so in Colombia. «Particularly it is a plant that was designed for a certain type of vaccine. Simply put, not all types of vaccines can be made in the same plant, but they are specific for one type of vaccine and that particular technology had certain market characteristics that Sinovac did not find necessarily attractive from Chile and we know that there were conversations with Colombia,” said Minister Etcheverry. The Sinovac vaccine plant was announced in 2021 by the Government of Sebastián Piñera. “It is a wonderful, happy, proud day: Chile returns to national vaccine production, Sinovac’s confidence gives a powerful signal of support to the country,” declared the then Minister of Health, Enrique Paris.
