Sinovac Vaccine Recipients More Vulnerable to Severe COVID-19 Symptoms than Pfizer

The study published on Tuesday (12/4) analyzed the effectiveness of the Sinovac vaccine for seven weeks in 2021 from October 1 to November 21, when the country was hit by the Delta variant of COVID-19.

Those who received the Sinovac vaccine were 4.59 times more likely to experience severe COVID-19 symptoms when compared to Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine recipients. Sinovac users were also 2.37 times more likely to be infected when compared to those who used the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Severe illness or symptoms of COVID-19 were defined as patients requiring oxygen supplementation in the hospital, admission to the intensive care unit (ICU), to death.

The report also shows the Moderna vaccine is more effective in preventing severe disease than the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Those taking Moderna were found to be less than half (0.42) times more likely to have severe COVID-19 than Pfizer-BioNTech recipients, and they were also less likely to become infected.

According to a report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the higher effectiveness of the Moderna vaccine is likely due to the higher mRNA content in the COVID-19 vaccine and the longer time interval between injections.
