Jakarta (Lampost.co) — The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) is examining the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine against the age group 60 years and over. There are at least three aspects that are seen, namely the potential for experiencing symptoms, being treated, and dying.
The study was conducted on 86,936 elderly citizens (elderly) in DKI Jakarta. Observations were made during March-April 2021.
For symptomatic, immunization using the Sinovac vaccine is effective in reducing the risk of the elderly group experiencing symptoms when exposed to COVID-19. Its effectiveness reaches 86 percent.
“Complete vaccination prevents 86 percent of symptomatic COVID-19 on the 14th day after the second dose,” wrote a research report from the Health Research and Development Agency (Balitbangkes) of the Ministry of Health, Saturday, July 7, 2021.
A total of 310 elderly people who have not been vaccinated have symptoms when exposed to COVID-19. Only 42 elderly who have been vaccinated against stage one and 56 elderly who have been vaccinated against stage two have symptoms when exposed to COVID-19.
Vaccination also reduces the potential for COVID-19 patients aged 60 and over to be hospitalized. Its effectiveness reaches 92 percent.
From the observations, 96 elderly people who have not been vaccinated are hospitalized. A total of 13 elderly people who received the first injection and eight elderly people who received the second injection were hospitalized.
The effectiveness of vaccination in protecting the elderly from death from COVID-19 is very high. The protection is 95 percent.
The number of elderly people who died before receiving the vaccine reached 45 people. Only two elderly people who received the first injection and three elderly people who received the second injection died from the corona virus.
