The request was submitted by the Butantan Institute, the laboratory linked to governorate of the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo and that produces Coronavac in the country, reported this Friday, July 30, 2021, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa, regulator).
Coronavac, the first vaccine used in the immunization campaign in Brazil and the one that was used the most in the first months of vaccination, can be applied to greater of 18 years in the country, according to the authorization he received last January.
“To include new audiences in the vaccine recipe, the responsible laboratory has to conduct studies that demonstrate the relationship between safety and efficacy for the desired age group,” Anvisa clarified in a statement.
“These studies can be conducted in Brazil or in other countries. In the case of Coronavac, the studies were carried out outside of Brazil, ”added the regulator.
So far the only vaccine against covid-19 authorized by the Anvisa to be applied in minors 18 years old is the Pfizer, which demonstrated the effectiveness and the security of the use of your immunizing in minors between 12 and 17 years old.

The request of the Butantan Institute to use the vaccine developed by Sinovac in kids Y teenagers occurs at a time when a large part of Brazil has already vaccinated, at least with the first dose, all vulnerable groups and almost everyone over 30 years old.
The projection of a large part of the regional capitals of the country is to conclude in mid-August the vaccination of all the adults, so they already program the start of the immunization of the teenagers in the last fortnight of August or at the latest in September.
Brazil, the second country with the most deaths and the third with the most contagions of covid-19 in the world, accumulated up to this Friday 555,460 victims and 19.9 million cases since the beginning of the pandemic, on February 26 of last year.
Despite the high numbers, the pandemic It has been slowing down in the country and the average of deaths in the last week fell this Friday to 1,017 per day, the lowest level in five months, and that of infections to 35,404 per day, the lowest since November of last year.
