A recent study in Chile revealed the effectiveness of the heterologous booster COVID-19 vaccine in Sinovac users in primary doses 1 and 2.
This means that recipients of two doses of Sinovac primary vaccine are advised to receive a booster injection with a different type of vaccine from Sinovac.
This research was carried out by a number of experts from the Institute of Science and Innovation in Medicine, Clinica Alemana Universidad del Desarrollo, to the Chilean Ministry of Health.
The study analyzed the effectiveness of the COVID-19 booster vaccines AZD1222 (Oxford-AstraZeneca) and BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) in Sinovac recipients of primary dose injection. The study involved 11,174,257 Chileans, 4,127,546 of whom completed the primary immunization schedule (two doses) using CoronaVac and received booster injections during the study period.
“Our results show that a third dose of Sinovac vaccine (Coronavac) or using different booster vaccines such as Pfrizer-BioNTech and Astra Zeneca vaccines in Sinovac primary vaccine users, both provide high levels of protection against COVID-19, including severe illness and death, “explained the researchers.
“However, receiving a booster vaccine in contrast to the primary vaccine resulted in a higher vaccine effectiveness than re-injecting the Sinovac vaccine (Coronavac) for a third dose, both in preventing hospitalization and death,” he continued.
What are the findings?
The study found that the COVID-19 vaccine was 79 percent effective at preventing symptoms in those who received the Sinovac homologous booster. While for Pfizer booster receivers, the effectiveness is higher, namely 97 percent and AstraZeneca 93 percent.
Regarding the risk of death, hospitalization, and ICU due to COVID-19, homologous booster recipients still have a lower effectiveness rate than heterologous booster recipients.
