The Chinese pharmaceutical firm Sinovac gave up continuing the deployment of its million-dollar project to install a research and development center and vaccine plant in Chile to take it to Colombia. This was reported by the Minister of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation, Aisén Etcheverry, on Radio Cooperativa.
The plant, which considered an investment of US$100 million to produce up to 50 million coronavirus vaccineshepatitis and influenza, among others, was going to be located in the Antofagasta region according to what was reported by the company in 2021. The original plan was for it to be in operation in the middle of last year.
However, the plan was not fulfilled. YesAs the Minister of Science explained to Radio Cooperativa, the company’s decision would be motivated by the “market size.” and don’t worry about permissions.
“In particular, it is a plant that was designed for a certain type of vaccine. Simply put, not all types of vaccines can be made in the same plant, but they are specific for one type of vaccine and that particular technology had certain market characteristics that Sinovac did not find necessarily attractive from Chile and we know that there were conversations with Colombia,” the minister explained to Cooperativa.
As reported by Diario Financiero and DF MAS, the construction of the Chinese company project considered disbursing US$100 million. Even at the beginning of January 2022, the firm already had a hired workforce who were preparing the deployment..
