Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Research in Peru on health workers shows the effectiveness of the Sinopharm vaccine is only 50.4% against Covid-19 infection and its variants. This is a consideration for giving a booster vaccine or a third dose.
This study was conducted on nearly 400,000 Peruvian health workers using data from February to June 2021. Peru is currently facing a second wave of Covid-19 infections from lambda and Gamma variants.
“The efficacy for preventing infection is not high and this should be considered as a booster to optimize the protection of health workers on the front lines,” said researchers from Peru’s National Institutes of Health and two other research institutes, as quoted by Reuters, Friday (13/8/2021). ).
The study also revealed that two doses of Sinopharm vaccine were 94% effective in preventing death.
“The most likely thing is that you will indeed need a third dose, the question is when is the best time and with what kind of vaccine,” Lely Solari, one of the paper’s seven authors, said.
Lely Solari said that although the efficacy of the Sinopharm vaccine was low, it still complied with the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO), where the efficacy of the Covid-19 vaccine was at least 50%.
The vaccine has demonstrated an efficacy rate of 78.1% against symptomatic COVID-19 cases in Phase III clinical trials, according to WHO data. An announcement from Peru’s health ministry said last month the vaccine was 98% effective against death.
The Lambda variant has recently received attention due to its spread in the United States and other Latin American countries, although some infectious disease experts say the spread of the variant may have begun to recede.
The Lambda variant is more resistant to vaccine-induced antibodies than the original version of the virus that emerged in Wuhan, laboratory studies have shown.
