Sinner wins his first US Open

Mexico City., Jannik Sinner became the first Italian to win the US Open by beating local Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. The world number one had to overcome a recent doping scandal while also experiencing personal revenge on the courts of New York to now win his second Grand Slam, after having won the Australian Open.

“This title means a lot to me, the last period of my career has not been easy, I want to thank my team for all the support. I have practiced a lot to get on these types of stages. I dedicate the victory to my aunt, who is not in good health,” said Sinner upon receiving the US Open title.

Sinner, 23, has exploded this season, winning six titles and climbing to the top of the ATP rankings in June. However, just a few weeks ago he faced controversy over alleged doping.

The Italian tested positive for clostebol, a testosterone-derived anabolic steroid banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), on March 10 during his participation in the Indian Wells Masters 1000. Eight days later, Sinner was subjected to a second test and again tested positive for traces of the substance.

However, the results were released in August and after an investigation Sinner was cleared. The tennis player was exposed to low amounts of clostebol by his physiotherapist, who used an over-the-counter spray to treat a cut on his finger and contaminated it when massaging him.

Now, on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court, he reiterated his potential as the best tennis player today by beating Fritz (No. 12), who, backed by the fans, was aiming to become the first American to win the US Open since Andy Roddick did so in 2003.

Without needing to be at his best, the Italian was able to counter Fritz’s insistence to win in three sets in just over two hours. Thus, Sinner closed the gap on the four titles held by the Spaniard Alcaraz, his great rival for the new era of tennis.
