Sinner skips 2024 Paris Olympics: why and who will replace him

The news we didn’t want to read. Jannik Sinner he withdraws from tennis tournament from the Paris Olympics. The world number 1’s staff announced it in a statement that summarized the situation: “After a week of preparation in Munich, Jannik began to feel symptoms of illness on Monday evening. After consulting his medical team the following day, he was strongly advised to withdraw from the Olympic Games due to the diagnosis of tonsillitis”. Captain Volandri has chosen Vavassori to replace him in singles and, in doubles with Musetti, his place will be taken by Darderi.

Sinner: “Extremely sad and disappointed”

Sinner himself explained: “I am extremely sad and disappointed. Participating in the Olympic Games was one of the main goals for this season. I was really looking forward to returning to Roland Garros and play for my country in this prestigious event. However, after seeing my doctors on Tuesday and waiting an extra day to see if my condition would improve, I had to give up.”

Sinner: “I hope to be able to compete in the Olympics in the future”

The world number one continued: “As I said, this is shocking for me and I hope to be able to compete in the Olympics in the future. I was really looking forward to competing with my teammates and the rest of the Italian team, but for now it will be like this. As advised by my medical team, I will now take some time to rest and recover to full health. I would like to wish the whole Italian team the best for this important event and I hope to come back stronger in the future.”

The precedents

It seems that fate is really ruthless. In Tokyo, a still immature Sinner, looking for the last step of growth, decided (in agreement with his team at the time) not to participate, preferring to concentrate on the planning of the season. It was a choice that caused a press campaign against him, accusations of betrayal to the country.
