The Paris-Bercy tournament has so far always been taboo for Jannik Sinner. “I’m happy to come back here even if this is a tournament in which I haven’t yet managed to play my best tennis” said the ATP n.1 on the media day preceding the last Masters 1000 of the year. “It was a long season, when you get to the last tournaments of the year anything can always happen: some players are fresher, someone else is more tired.”
“Coaching? I don’t think we’ll see big changes.”
Sinner then went into detail on many topics, including coaching reform, with the possibility of coaches interacting with the players during the match. “I admit that I haven’t read the regulation in detail yet, but I know that it concerns coaching from the box. Honestly, I don’t think much will change. Even now there are coaches who give guidance to their players. In this sport, however, you are alone on the pitch and you have to learn to handle situations on your own. And in any case, there is already a certain amount of communication with the coach and you often spend so much time together that you understand what he wants to suggest to you just by looking at him. So I don’t think we’ll see any big changes.”
The draw
Sinner will make his debut in the second round, Tuesday 29th: “It’s a really tough draw, especially on these pitches, where facing big hitters is always difficult. But I try to take the tournament day by day. The board can always open, or close, it depends. I will try to prepare as best I can against Ben (Shelton) or Felix (Auger-Aliassime), the former is in excellent form while I count the latter I have never won. It will definitely be a tough challenge but I am confident and focused on myself. I hope to improve compared to the last two years, in which I struggled on this field.”
The state of form
The ATP n.1 admitted that he does not feel too tired: “I feel like I have made very careful decisions together with my team during the year, precisely to arrive ready at the end. I was lucky enough not to have to play too many tournaments and to always finish when I participated, which helped me. My level seems good, but, as always, the field will give the definitive answers. Mentally I feel good, and for me the main event will be the Finals in Turin. Since the beginning of the year I have been very motivated to qualify. Now we’ll see how it goes.”
