New York. Italian Jannik Sinner, the number one in men’s tennis, defeated Russian Daniil Medvedev on Wednesday and advanced to his first semi-final at the US Open.
Sinner dismissed Medvedev, the only former US Open champion still alive, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a two-hour, 40-minute match that concluded around midnight in New York.
“We know each other very well, I knew it was going to be a very tough match,” Sinner said on Centre Court at Flushing Meadows.
The Italian will face British player Jack Draper, number 25 in the ATP, in the semi-finals. Draper has been the great revelation of the men’s tournament by reaching his first major semi-final without dropping a set.
“I know him too, we are good friends off the court. It will be tough, he played incredibly,” Sinner admitted. “We will see what happens, I am happy to be in the semi-finals now.”
The number one again thanked the support of the New York public, where he landed in the midst of the scandal following the revelation of his double positive test for clotbelly in March, of which he was acquitted because it was considered involuntary.
Sinner, the fourth active player to reach at least the semi-finals of all four Grand Slams, is the overwhelming favourite to lift the trophy on Sunday after early exits by Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.
The other semi-final on Friday will be contested by Americans Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe.
In the closing round of the quarter-finals, Sinner and Medvedev played a strange match with the first three sets in which the first to break found no further resistance.
The big battle took place in the fourth set, in which Sinner showed himself to be more daring and accurate to finish off a second great triumph against Medvedev this year.
The world number one won the Australian Open final in January, coming back from two sets down to claim his only Grand Slam trophy.
Medvedev hit back in the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Wednesday’s tie-break in New York was seen by many as an early final since the exit of Djokovic and Alcaraz.
The Moscow-born tennis player was unable to exert his dominance on the fast courts of Flushing Meadows, where he was champion in 2021 and finalist in 2019 and 2023.
The Russian was inferior on serve (67 percent effectiveness on the first serve) and committed more unforced errors (57 to 38) against an opponent determined to complete his first great performance at the US Open.
