New York., World number one Jannik Sinner of Italy emerged victorious from a physical battle with Britain’s Jack Draper on Friday to advance to his first US Open final.
The Italian, who overcame a sprained left wrist in the second set, won 7-5, 7-6 (7/3) and 6-2 against the promising Draper, who also finished the match with visible physical limitations.
On Sunday, Sinner will become the first Italian player to contest a US Open men’s final, and he will do so against a local player, Frances Tiafoe or Taylor Fritz, who faced each other in Friday’s second semi-final.
“We’re in New York and I’m playing against an American, so the crowd will be a bit more on his side, which is normal,” said Australian Open champion Sinner, confident that his wrist problem is not serious.
“The physiotherapist relaxed her very quickly and the pain went away, which is good. We’ll see how she feels tomorrow when she cools down. I hope it’s nothing to worry about,” he explained.
One step away from winning the Grand Slam that had eluded him the most, the Italian has managed to isolate himself from the enormous controversy surrounding his double positive test for clostebol in March, of which he was acquitted because it was considered involuntary.
Regardless of who his opponent is, the Italian is considered the clear favourite to win a tournament that saw Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz say goodbye early.
