Sad news has come from the world of football. Former AS Roma, Lazio and Inter defender Sinisa Mihajlovic to die.
Mihajlovic, iconic with his free-kick goals, died today, Friday (12/16/2022) in a clinic in Rome. The Serbian man died in the midst of his battle with leukemia.
“A unique man, extraordinarily professional, available, kind to everyone. He courageously fought a bad disease”, reads the official press release from the family, as reported by Football Italy.
“We thank the doctors and nurses who have helped him along the way, with love and esteem, especially Francesca Bonifazi, Antonio Curti, Prof. Alessandro Rambaldi and Dr. Luca Marchetti”.
“Sinisa will always be with us, living with all the love she has given us,” reads the statement.
Sinisa Mihajlovic was diagnosed with leukemia in 2019. He recovered after undergoing a series of treatments but announced in March that the disease had returned.
He was still Bologna manager when he started treatment this year but was sacked last September due to the team’s poor start. Previously he coached Catania, Fiorentina, Serbian national team, Sampdoria, Milan, Turin and Sporting.
As a player, he is known for his long shot and passing skills. Mihajlovic still holds the record for the most goals scored from free kicks in Serie A with 28 goals.
