Tomáš Macháč and Kateřina Siniaková conquer the doubles courts in Paris, both are still striving for two medals at the Olympics

Before the start of the Olympics, news spread through the Czech media that Kateřina Siniaková and Tomáš Macháč are no longer a couple in private. However, the end of the relationship did not affect their interplay on the clay.

Siniaková already before LOH 2024 she noted that they are both professionals, so they will only focus on achieving tennis success in France. Now they have him in sight – both together and individually.

Although the Czech team is still waiting for a medal after five days of the Paris Games, Macháč and Siniakova are doing everything to ensure that our national team joins the 47 countries that already have decorated athletes before the end of the first week.

An attack on the medal could be expected from Siniaková, after all, together with Krejčíková, they defend the triumph from Tokyo. But it didn’t look very likely that the blonde doubles player would succeed even in the mix with Macháč.

Our tennis players faced the hardest possible draw in the mixed doubles. In the very first round, Macháč and Siniaková had to face top opponents, seeded number one Zverev and Siegemund saw off from kurtu.

Suddenly, a great opportunity opened up for the Czech pair, which they took advantage of yesterday when they beat the Japanese pair Nishikori/Shibahara again in two sets. After two wins, it is certain that Siniaková a Machac they will play together in two more matches. If they win at least one, they get one of the valuable metals.

It’s all the more surprising that neither appears in the mix very often. They played together for the first time at the 2022 Australian Open, but ended immediately after the first match. They appeared at Roland Garros for the second time this year, but were immediately eliminated there as well. At the Olympics, however, they evened the balance at 2:2.

Another win would put them side by side of two Czech mixed couples who won an Olympic medal. Already in 1920, Milada Skrbková and Ladislav Žemla managed to do it, 96 years later their bronze was equaled by Radek Štěpánek and Lucía Hradecká in Rio.

Auger-Aliassime and Dabrowski finish in Round 1 in Tokyo, this time aiming for second-ever Canadian medal

Canada is, of course, primarily a country oriented towards winter sports, so perhaps it is not so surprising that, like the Czech Republic, it remains without a medal from the 2024 Olympics after five days.

But the Maple Leaves also look forward to brighter tomorrows. One of the summer sports in which Canadian athletes are increasingly gaining ground is undoubtedly tennis. Félix Auger-Aliassime is currently ranked #19 in singles in the world, having even broken into the top ten in the past.

In addition, Auger-Aliassime has most of his career ahead of him, he will only celebrate his 24th birthday next week. He can diversify them with one or even two medal gifts. He is playing in great form at the Paris Olympics, yesterday he defeated Medvedeva in two sets and made it to the quarterfinals.

But in the singles, the young Canadian still has a very difficult path to the podium, this afternoon he will face Casper Ruud, a two-time French Open finalist. And if he beats him, he will probably not miss a fight with the current clay champion Carlos Alcaraz.

The medals in the mix are undoubtedly much lower, especially when Auger-Aliassime is creating tandem with experienced doubles player Gabriela Dabrowski. They had already played together in Tokyo, but then their first match together did not work out; they were eliminated in the very first match. They played together for the second time this year in the United Cup and also lost.

Dabrowski subsequently she had to miss the spring clay season due to injury. However, you can’t tell from her game under five rings, the current #5 in the women’s doubles ranking follows on from a successful Wimbledon, in which she played the women’s doubles final (against Siniaková, by the way).

Dabrowski handles the transition to a slower surface very well. Similar to Siniaková and Macháč, the Canadians were able to adjust the joint balance from 0:2 to 2:2 in the mix. They won both victories by over super tie-break, but it was against quality opponents – first vs. Salisbury/Watson and yesterday against the tournament’s #3 pair Fritz/Gauff.

Of course, the same applies to Auger-Aliassimo and Dabrowski at the moment as it does to our pair. They only need to win one of the two matches to reach the podium. If they succeed, they win Canada’s second ever tennis medal. The only one so far has been won by the men’s doubles team Lareau/Nestor, who won gold in Sydney.

Mutual matches Macháč, Siniaková vs. Auger-Aliassime, Dabrowski (results, H2H record, statistics)

The two pairs have only appeared together on the court four times in their careers, so they have not yet had the opportunity to compare their strengths in this minor tennis discipline.

Under the five rings, however, mixed doubles is of course very prestigious, the chance to win an Olympic medal also attracts tennis players who otherwise only rarely compete in doubles, let alone mixed.

Even in singles, Macháč and Auger-Aliassim have never met each other, the same applies to Siniaková and Dabrowski, who know each other well from matches in fours. In 2019, they even played together on the same side at the WTA Moscow tournament, then they reached the semi-finals.
