After almost two years, tennis player Kateřina Siniaková reached the semifinals of the tournament on the WTA circuit in singles. At the clay court in Parma today, she followed up on the second round win over former world number one Serena Williams and defeated the eighth seed Caroline Garcia from France 7: 5 and 6: 1 in the quarterfinals.
The first set was like on a swing. Both players alternated great moments with mistakes. Siniaková lost service to 1: 2, but turned to 4: 2.
She lost three more games, but at 4: 5 she didn’t let the former world number 4 be finished by Garcia. In the end, she kept the balls in play and after the French car she got the first set in an hour and three minutes.
“The first set was the key,” Siniak said in a court interview after the match. “I didn’t feel my game from the beginning and it was hard. She plays aggressively and I’m really glad I won it,” breathed the 25-year-old Czech, currently the 68th singles player.
In the second set, Siniak trusted herself much more and, like against Williams, she dominated. She defended well and added winning balls in important moments. “I hope to continue these performances here,” wished the world doubles eight.
He was among the top four in singles on the WTA Tour for the first time since the Bronx tournament in August 2019. He will play his sixth single final and first since January 2018 (Shenzhen) with the winner of the American duel between Cori Gauff and Amanda Anisimova.
