Single Parents and Citizen’s Benefit: How Much Money Can Single Parents Expect to Receive?

Citizens’ money has been available since this year. The new social benefit is in many aspects very similar to the replaced Hartz IV. The job center covers parts of the rent and also some other additional costs, such as electricity costs, a new washing machine or some renovations.

But what does it look like for single people with children who receive citizen’s benefit? How much money will they get under the new regulation and, above all, how much money will they get to look after the child. All information at a glance.

Single parents and citizen’s benefit: What do single parents get?

The first question is how much money single people get. According to the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs Single citizens’ benefit recipients receive 502 euros per month. This also applies to single parents: single parents receiving citizen’s benefit receive 563 euros for themselves, regardless of the number of children or their age.

Single parents with citizen’s benefit: What additional needs do they get?

For single parents, the amount of additional needs depends on the age and number of children. The Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs staggers the payments as follows; the percentages refer to the standard requirement. As a rule, this is 563 euros, as already explained. There are the following additional citizen’s allowance requirements for children:

  • A child under seven years of age: 36 percent
  • A child over seven years old: twelve percent
  • Two or three children under 16 years: 36 percent
  • Two children over 16 years old: 24 percent
  • Four children: 48 percent
  • From five children: 60 percent

An example to make this scale more understandable: A single woman receives citizen’s benefit and has two children, one is 6 years old and one is twelve. The woman receives 563 euros as her standard requirement plus an additional 36 percent of her standard requirement to look after the children. That’s an additional 202.68 euros. In total, the woman receives 765.68 euros in citizen’s money per month.

By the way: In order for a person to be entitled to citizen’s benefit, they must meet certain requirements. As part of the citizen’s benefit, it is also regulated how large the recipient’s apartment can be. However, the living space alone is not used as the sole criterion for adequacy when it comes to citizen’s benefit.
