Around 1.9 million people live in Hamburg. And the Statistics Office North has examined exactly how they live, whether alone or as a couple, with the whole family or in a flat-sharing community. The results – by district – are now available.

There were around 1.04 million households in the Hanseatic city last year. Of these, almost 570,000 households – i.e. 54.4 percent – were single-person households. Compared to the previous year, the proportion remained constant. If you look at the districts, it is noticeable that the proportion of single households in the centrally located and densely populated areas is particularly high. In Dulsberg, Barmbek-Nord and -Süd, St. Pauli, Billbrook and Neustadt, among others, this applied to more than two thirds of all households in 2021. In percentage terms, there are the fewest single households in Lemsahl-Mellingstedt, Wohldorf-Ohlstedt and Duvenstedt.

Almost every fifth household in Hamburg – the proportion is 18.1 percent – has children. The office in Neuallermöhe recorded the highest shares with 30.5 percent, followed by Lemsahl-Mellingstedt with 27.9 percent and Wohldorf-Ohlstedt with 27.1 percent. In the urban parts of the city, on the other hand, there were relatively few households with children. In Borgfelde, St. Georg, Dulsberg, Barmbek-Nord and -Süd and in Neustadt, among others, the proportion was less than twelve percent.
