Single Dose Vaccination for Spanish Children Against Flu: Vaccination Advisory Committee Confirms

MADRID, 25 (SERVIMEDIA)

All Spanish children between 6 and 59 months will be able to be vaccinated against the flu this season “with a single dose”, as confirmed this Monday by Dr. Antonio Iofrío, secretary of the Vaccine Advisory Committee of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics (AEP). . Last year only three autonomous communities did so: Galicia, Andalusia and Murcia.

This was revealed in an interview with Servimedia, in which he also assured that children will be vaccinated with a single dose, compared to the two doses that were given in previous years.

Flu vaccines may be intramuscular or inhaled. The latter have advantages over intramuscular injections, in addition to avoiding punctures. “By using the inhaled vaccine, the child generates antibodies in the area of the nasal mucosa and in the throat, which generate great protection,” explained Dr. Antonio Iofrío.

“There are two types of vaccines: ones that are inactivated that are given intramuscularly and another, the attenuated one whose route of administration is intranasal, but that not all autonomous communities will have available,” explained the secretary of the Vaccine Advisory Committee. of the AEP. Both can be administered from six months of age.

SINGLE DOSE

The single dose also helps the effectiveness of the vaccine, according to the Spanish Pediatric Association. In previous years, two doses had to be administered to children “a month apart,” but in this new vaccination season only one dose will be given, which improves the protection of minors against the flu. There are caveats to this new dosage, such as “special risk children” who continue to receive the two doses a month apart.

Regarding when children should begin to be vaccinated against covid-19, Dr. Iofrío refers to the current recommendations of the Ministry of Health, which contemplate the vaccination of people, starting at six months of age if the child has with some risk factor “such as chronic diseases or some risk condition from 6 months of age.”

Finally, to avoid spreading the flu to babies under 6 months old, who cannot yet receive this vaccine, the AEP advises their family members and caregivers to get vaccinated against the flu, especially if their mother has not received this vaccine during the pregnancy.
