Erik de Jong, better known as Spinvis, will receive the Lennart Nijgh Prize this year. The singer-songwriter will be honored as a lyricist at the Buma Awards Gala on Monday evening.
De Jong debuted in 2002 with the album Spiderfish and in 2004 won the Silver Harp as an up-and-coming talent. In the same year he wrote Before I forget by Lenette van Dongen.
In addition, De Jong had success as a singer himself with songs like Luggage carrier in I just want to swim. His latest album was released last month, Be-Bop-A-Sleep.
“Lyrical, poetic, visual, layered, personal, autobiographical; it all applies to Spinvis’ lyrics,” says Bernard Kobes, CEO of copyright organization BumaStemra. “Each album is another lyrical journey of discovery. Anyone who has been able to achieve this for more than twenty years truly deserves the Lennaert Nijgh Prize.”
Buma Culture director is also enthusiastic about the prize for De Jong. “With his use of language, Spinvis is able to create a world with words that is both recognizable and mysterious. He juggles with words and sentences, with the aim of taking the listener on a wonderful journey.”
The Lennart Nijgh Prize will be awarded on Monday evening at the Buma Awards. It was previously announced that DJ Paul Elstak and singer Herman van Veen will be awarded an oeuvre prize.
