Karl Lauterbach was recently one of the German politicians with the highest approval ratings and the greatest TV presence, but he is not a health minister that everyone loves – there was hate mail, even death threats. Lauterbach is not just a politician in focus, but somehow also part of popular culture. There is no other way to explain why the singer-songwriter Funny van Dannen is now dedicating his own anthem to him.
Van Dannen, known for satirical pieces and idiosyncratic love songs, dreams of a demo in his new single “Karl Lauterbach” where Putin, Söder, Trump, Merkel and the Pope protest against the “state of the world”. Hansi Flick, Kim Kardashian, Meghan and Ronaldo also run further back. “And again and again someone could be seen who looked like Karl Lauterbach”. Afterwards, Lauterbach is even standing in van Dannen’s bedroom when he wakes up – “I was so happy not to lose my mind”.
“Almost as a multiple personality, one might think”
It is not yet known what Lauterbach thinks of this appreciation. Van Dannen’s record label addressed the SPD politician directly in a press release. “Here’s a song for you,” the letter said. “A funny van Dannen song. Yes, almost a hymn to your constant and sustained presence everywhere. Even when it comes to improving the state of the world, you are there. Almost as a multiple personality, one could mean. First someone has to imitate you.” Should Karl Lauterbach want to get to know the songwriter, the label would be happy to “help”.
