Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar, popular for her songs in Bollywood films, has died in Mumbai. In her long career, she has sung more than 30,000 songs in 36 different languages, in films in which she herself rarely appeared. Mangeshkar was 92 years old.
Mangeshkar started singing when she was five. She was taught by her father who worked at the theater. In 1949 she broke through with the song Aayega Aanewala from the movie Expensive. From then on, she was inundated with requests from the filmmakers in the studios in Mumbai. In Indian films there is usually a lot of singing, the songs support the story.
In the decades that followed, Mangeshkar sang thousands of songs for movies like Pakeezah, Awaara in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Her songs were played back by the actresses. Mangeshkar called her voice a “gift from God”. Some of her songs were also heard in temples or other sacred places.
