Robby Steinhardt, the singer and violinist who gave the rock band Kansas its signature sound with his electric violin, has passed away. His wife Cindy announced this on Facebook. The band itself has also posted a statement on Facebook.

Steinhardt died Saturday at the age of 71 due to complications after an acute inflammation of the pancreas. According to his wife, he had just recorded a solo album and was looking forward to performing again.

Kansas had hits like “Carry On Wayward Son” (1976) and “Dust in the Wind” (1977). The group sold 15 million records worldwide. Steinhardt was a band member from 1973 to 1982 and from 1997 to 2006.
