Lanegan began his career in music in the mid-1980s with the Screaming Trees, considered to be one of the first groups grunge together with Soundgarden, Nirvana and Pearl Jam, with whom they shared the state of origin (they were all part of the Washington music scene, in the northwest of the United States). Lanegan gave a strong and recognizable stamp to the Screaming Trees, with his deep voice from crooner more than as the frontman of a rock group.

But in his prolific career he had many collaborations with other groups and artists, including Kurt Cobain, Moby, Neko Case and Isobel Campbell of Belle and Sebastian, among others. In addition to releasing 11 solo records, Lanegan was part of the Queens of the Stone Age and helped found the Gutter Twins.
